There are two main things we want to know about altruistic behavior. First, does it exist? Second, if so, how can we produce more of it? The second question is practical. Although altruism does not guarantee desirable results--suicide bombers may be as selfless as anyone you can find--what we might call constructive altruism could alleviate a lot of suffering. If we knew how to get people to care less about Number One and more about others, the world might become a less nasty place.
