My intentions are to ignite an interest and inspire a personal use of the ancient runic alphabet. This book is a primer, an elementary introduction and explanation of the “ABC’s” of a language that is obscured in time and mystery. The book contains a review of the meaning and history of the runes, an example method for personal use, an illustrated catalogue of interpretations, and a sixteen minute musical awakening meditation.
The knowledge of the runes can provide an individual with a framework for self-analysis, guidance, and, with a deeper understanding, magic. There are numerous sources for study of the history, practice, and psychology of the runes. This knowledge is complex and diverse because it originates in the shamanistic traditions of pre bronze-age tribes that inhabited the whole of northern Europe. The study of the runes reveals multiple interpretations and many contradicting aspects regarding the number and form of the symbols, the names and sounds, the formal structures for personal and communal use, etc.
While this rich history is important, there can be a primal and personal connection with the essence of each ancient symbol. These connections, when seen as fundamental aspects of life experience, can be doorways to knowledge of self. For the seeker of self understanding, the runes can be a source of thinking points or meditations.
